About the Event

On Thursday, October 19th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, the Fraser Institute will hold its annual Founders’ Award tribute dinner honouring Canada’s greatest business and philanthropic leaders. We are extremely pleased to announce that this year the award will be presented to Mr. Edward Sonshine, Chief Executive Officer, RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust.

The Fraser Institute Founders’ Award, in recognition of its founders T. Patrick Boyle and Michael A. Walker, is the Institute’s highest honour. The award is presented annually to individuals in recognition of their exceptional entrepreneurial achievements, generous philanthropic endeavours and dedication to competitive markets. Past recipients include exemplary Canadians such as Linda Hasenfratz, Jim Jarrell, Jack Cockwell, Peter Gilgan, Eric Sprott, Peter Brown, Ned Goodman, Clay Riddell,Peter Munk, and Tony Fell

Please join the Fraser Institute in celebrating Mr. Sonshine's contributions to Ontarian and Canadian business. In previous years, Ontarians have been very generous with their support which has been instrumental in ensuring each honouree is celebrated in a manner fitting of their contribution.  We hope that this year you will help us continue that tradition.

Edward Sonshine is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust, Canada’s largest REIT.  Primarily focused on retail real estate, RioCan owns and manages a portfolio having an aggregate area of over 60 million square feet consisting of 300 properties, all in Canada.
 
Mr. Sonshine has overseen RioCan’s growth from an initial enterprise value of less than $100 million when it went public in January of 1994, to its current enterprise value of approximately $14 billion.
 
Mr. Sonshine is a Director of Cineplex Entertainment and Sinai Health System in Toronto.
 
After practicing law for 15 years, during which he was awarded his Queen’s Counsel, he went into the real estate business in 1987.  In 2011, Mr. Sonshine was invested into the Order of Ontario and in 2013, Mr. Sonshine was named Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year.
