On Thursday, November 2nd at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the Fraser Institute will hold its annual Founders’ Award tribute dinner honouring Canada’s greatest business and philanthropic leaders. We are extremely pleased to announce that this year the award will be presented to Mr. Ian Telfer,Chairman of the Board and Director of Goldcorp.

The Fraser Institute Founders’ Award, in recognition of its founders T. Patrick Boyle and Michael A. Walker, is the Institute’s highest honour. The award is presented annually to individuals in recognition of their exceptional entrepreneurial achievements, generous philanthropic endeavours and dedication to competitive markets. Past recipients include exemplary Canadians such as Richard Jaffray, Keith and Ryan Beedie, Chip Wilson, Brandt C. Louie, George Melville, Jim Treliving, Darren Entwistle, Norman Keevil and Peter Brown

Please join the Fraser Institute in celebrating Mr. Telfer's contributions to British Columbian and Canadian business. In previous years, British Columbians have been very generous with their support which has been instrumental in ensuring each honouree is celebrated in a manner fitting of their contribution. We hope that this year you will help us continue that tradition.

Ian Telfer
Mr. Telfer has been Chairman of Goldcorp since 2006 and was Chief Executive Officer of Goldcorp and... more

Mr. Telfer has been Chairman of Goldcorp since 2006 and was Chief Executive Officer of Goldcorp and its predecessor Wheaton River Minerals since 2001. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, he transformed the company into one of the world’s premier senior gold producers. He also served as Chairman of the World Gold Council from 2009-2013.
 
With over 30 years of experience in the precious metals industry, he has been a founder, officer and director of numerous international mining companies including: TVX Gold; Lihir Gold; SilverWheaton; UraniumOne; and Newgold. Mr. Telfer has financed, developed and operated mines throughout the Americas, Asia and Australia.
 
Mr. Telfer has been recognized for his contributions to the mining industry numerous times. In 2007 he received the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2013 Mr. Telfer was named one of Canada’s top 25 most powerful business people and listed in Canadian Business Magazine’s “The Power 50.” In 2015 he was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and in 2016 he was honoured as a Laureate of the British Columbia Business Hall of Fame.
 
Mr. Telfer is also known for his philanthropic endeavors. In 2007 he donated $25 million to what is now known as the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa. He is a Patron of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation and generously supports many local causes.
 
Mr. Telfer is a Fellow in the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Ottawa. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa in 2015.
