1. How do I become eligible for the Student Leaders Colloquium (SLC) program?
In order to be invited to apply for the SLC program, you must have attended one of our post-secondary seminars in the current academic year. For example, if you attended a seminar in the Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 semesters, and you were selected, you would be invited to apply for the 2019 SLC program. Students that are selected by our speakers and staff will be invited to apply for the program.
2. When are invitations sent out?
Invitations are sent by email to the selected participants in February/March, depending on the date of the seminar you attended.
3. Why is there an age-limit set for the SLC program?
Our target age group is from 17-30 to allow for students just beginning their academic and professional careers to discuss public policy with other students from across the country. The age limit helps to ensure the participants have an opportunity to network with fellow students around their own age.
4. I'm interested in attending, but my field of study is not related to economics or public policy. Can I apply?
Yes – participants from all academic backgrounds are welcome to apply!
5. I'm an international student attending a post-secondary institution in Canada. Can I apply?
Yes. If you have a valid student visa, you are welcome to apply.
6. I'm a graduate or doctorate student. Can I apply?
Yes, you are welcome apply.
7. I recently graduated from my post-secondary institution. Can I apply?
Unfortunately, you cannot apply. The program is only open for students currently registered in high school or a post-secondary institution.
8. What are the expectations or requirements for SLC participants?
Participants are expected to complete a selection of readings, which will be sent by mail one month prior to the program. They are expected to attend the full program, which includes the welcome reception on Tuesday, the two full days at the Fraser Institute, and the farewell dinner on Thursday evening. Participants are required to stay at the hosting hotel for 3 nights (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), and share a room with a fellow SLC participant of the same sex.
9. Will I be sharing my accommodation during the SLC program?
Yes, you will be sharing a room with another SLC participant of the same gender. Roommates will be chosen at random, and will be introduced to their roommate via email prior to the program.
10. Can I extend my stay in Vancouver?
Yes. You are able to book your flights a little earlier or later than the outlined program dates to allow for a short vacation in Vancouver. However, the flights must be within a certain time period, and must be the same or lower cost than your flights would have been had you flown on the intended dates. If you stay longer than the program dates in Vancouver, you will be responsible for finding and covering the cost of your accommodation in the interim.
11. Will the roundtrip cost of the transportation from the airport to the hotel be covered?
Yes. Participants will be reimbursed for the roundtrip expense of using the Canada Line SkyTrain, and will receive their cash refund at the end of the program.
12. When will I learn about the status of my application?
You will be notified about the status of your application in early-mid April.
13. I have participated in the SLC program in the past. Am I eligible to attend again?
You are welcome to apply again; however, as there are limited spaces and a significant number of strong candidates, we may instead select a participant who has not yet attended the SLC program.
